Wearing: Zara top and heeled sandals / H&M skirt / Céline sunglasses and bag / ILIA Beauty lipstick / Kure Bazaar nail polish
Red lipstick and stripes is a combination that has always struck me as French. Hence, the title of this post, which is a famous line in the film 'Casablanca'. There's something special about bright red lipstick: it brightens up your face and gives your overall look an instant boost. I don't wear it often but when I want some cheap and fast glamour, I'll go to town on my lips with it. When I went 'clean' (i.e. started using natural/organic beauty products only), I was worried that I wouldn't be able to find a replacement for MAC's 'Ruby Woo' or 'Russian Red' (my previous go-to bright red lipsticks), but I was pleased to discover ILIA Beauty's lipstick in 'Wild Child' and so far, so good. I'll post a proper review soon!
Stripes are versatile and chic; they can be dressed up or down but still look put-together. I paired this old Zara striped top with a velvet skater skirt that I bought from H&M a while ago but never got around to wearing. I deliberately picked a top with navy blue and white stripes rather than black and white stripes because I didn't want my outfit to be too matchy-matchy as my sunglasses, skirt and shoes are already black. I like skater skirts because they're flattering on the figure and it's fun to flip them around. Speaking of skater skirts, I have a funny anecdote regarding the purchase of this particular one: two of my close friends and I were browsing around at H&M when I came across this skirt, which we instantly fell in love with and left the store with one each. I just find it amusing how all three of us have the exact same skirt. :D
In accordance with the French theme, I wanted to keep the outfit as simple as possible, so I opted for fuss-free accessories that aren't too flashy but are still beautiful in their simplicity. I chose a bag that's in the same vibrant shade of red as the lipstick, both of which provide the pops of colour that jazz up the outfit. Also, I'm really into single sole heeled sandals lately. They look minimal yet effortless and elegant. These Zara ones look like the Saint Laurent heeled sandals, but cost a fraction of the price. Although they're not the most comfortable to walk in (heels without platforms usually aren't), I'm hoping to break them in so that they'd be easier to walk in. The bright turquoise/mint nail polish on my toenails is a bit jarring compared to the overall red, white, black and navy colour scheme of my look, but sometimes it's the little unexpected surprises that end up making an outfit.
